Rock Breaking Cartridge (RBC)

Rock Breaking Cartridges (RBC) are designed for controlled rock-breaking applications where conventional blasting may be unsuitable due to concerns relating to vibration, air blast, fly rock, or shock effects.

Key Advantages

The RBC system is particularly suited to applications requiring:

  • Controlled rock breaking in confined or sensitive areas.
  • Reduced disturbance to surrounding structures and equipment.
  • Access to areas where conventional blasting is difficult or impractical.
  • Rapid removal of oversize rocks and blockages on conveyor belts and underground bins,

Typical Applications

  • Areas where vibration, air blast and shock effects need to be minimised.
  • Secondary breaking of oversize rocks in open-cast mining and quarrying operations.
  • Rock breaking in close proximity to plant, equipment and structures.
  • Rock excavation near existing structures, including:
    o Building foundations
    o Sewer lines
    o Swimming pools
o Other underground services and infrastructure
    o Tunnelling near dam walls
  • Rock excavation inside large structures, such as warehouses, factories and industrial buildings.
  • Rock breaking in dolomitic areas, where controlled rock excavation may be required.
  • Breaking of oversize rocks lodged in crushers, where access and controlled breaking are important.
  • Breaking of oversize rocks obstructing conveyor belts, bins or interfering with material flow.

Underground Mining Applications

RBCs are also suitable for controlled rock-breaking applications in underground mining environments, subject to applicable mine standards, risk assessments and regulatory requirements, including:

  • Breaking of oversize rock and hang-ups.
  • Breaking of concrete or other obstructions.
  • Clearing blockages on conveyors, bins and crushers
  • Breaking of rock where conventional blasting may be impractical.
  • Controlled excavation and breaking in confined areas.

Alternative to Expansive Rock-Breaking Chemicals

RBCs can provide an alternative to expansive rock-breaking chemicals (expansive mortar) where a faster

rock-breaking process is required.

Unlike expansive mortar, which generally relies on a gradual expansion process over an extended period, RBC applications are intended to provide rapid and controlled rock breaking, subject to the specific application, site conditions and approved operating procedures.
