Obatex (Pty) Ltd was established following more than four and a half years of extensive research, product development, and strategic planning. The company commenced the manufacture of explosives in June 2015 and is registered and licensed by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Chief Inspector of Explosives, with authorisation from the Department of Employment and Labour to manufacture explosives. Obatex operates in full compliance with all applicable South African explosives legislation and regulatory requirements.

From the outset, Obatex focused on supplying the quarry and mining industries with high-quality Black Powder and Blasting Powder. The company also introduced the Obatex Fuse Head/Igniter, providing customers with a complete blasting solution. Today, Obatex is the only manufacturer of blasting powder in South Africa, supplying the local market while exporting products to several African countries.

In 2018, Obatex achieved a significant technological milestone by successfully developing an innovative Rock Breaking Cartridge (RBC) pyrotechnic granular composition. This breakthrough made Obatex the first and only manufacturer in South Africa to develop a nitrocellulose-free rock breaking composition, substantially improving product safety while maintaining reliable performance. This innovation reflects the company’s commitment to research, technological advancement, and the development of safer alternatives within the explosives industry.

Following an extensive product development programme, practical field evaluations, and the successful completion of the required United Nations (UN) classification testing, Obatex was granted a licence to manufacture Rock Breaking Cartridges (RBCs) in May 2026. This achievement marked the successful commercialisation of nearly a decade of research and development and reinforced Obatex’s position as a leader in innovative, low-hazard rock breaking technology.

Further strengthening its position in the market, Obatex acquired the licence and intellectual property rights for the manufacture of Railway Detonators from Rheinmetall Denel Munitions in 2018.

Commercial production commenced in May 2019 at the company’s dedicated manufacturing facility, making Obatex the only manufacturer of Railway Detonators in South Africa.

Obatex Railway Detonators have been approved and successfully utilised by leading rail operators, including PRASA, Transnet and Rovos Rail. To date, the company has supplied more than 65,000 railway detonators, consistently demonstrating exceptional reliability, quality and performance. The products are manufactured with 100% local content, reflecting Obatex’s commitment to supporting South African manufacturing, skills development, and economic growth.

In late 2019, Obatex further diversified its product portfolio with the development of an Athletic Starter Blank and a locally manufactured Starter Pistol. Production commenced in October 2020, and Obatex remains the only manufacturer of these products in South Africa.
